Information Literacy Benchmarks (Grade 9 – 12)
Independently formulates topic, question or problem to be researched, incorporating
existing knowledge and revising topic according to information gathered.
Skills include:
- Developing questions
- Determining topics/subtopics
- Determining keywords
Develops appropriate search strategies to efficiently locate information.
Skills include:
- Recognizing type of information needed
- Knowledge of variety of sources of information
- Boolean logic/ keyword searches
- Indexes/Directories
Evaluates and selects information appropriate to the topic. Skills include:
- Determining relevancy of information
- Determining authority/credibility
- Determining bias
- Determining currency
- Note taking
Synthesizes (assembles) facts, opinions, and point of view appropriate
to one’s work. Skills include:
- Developing topic
- Incorporate sufficient information
- Utilize appropriate format/organization
- Demonstrates knowledge of topic
Uses information responsibly and ethically. Skills include:
- Using complete bibliographic citations
- Adhering to copyright restrictions for print, non-print, and electronic
sources
Opportunities to develop
and apply these skills will be provided through a wide range
of courses across all areas of the curriculum.
