General Information

South Londonderry Elementary School was built in 1978 and provides education for children in Grades 1-5 who live in Londonderry's southern district. Currently there are 655 students enrolled at South School and 31 grade 1 –5 classrooms.

The administration, professional and support staff of South School are dedicated and committed to support the children, families and community of Londonderry. South School's administrative staff includes a principal, assistant principal and special education building director. The teaching staff is composed of 31 classroom teachers, 15 special education teachers, guidance counselors, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, art teachers, music teachers, physical education teachers, reading teachers, and enrichment teachers. In addition, the students are supported by 26 special educational assistants and regular classroom assistants in grades 1 - 5. Other staff include a librarian and library assistants, a computer assistant, school nurses, secretaries, day and evening custodians, an educational evaluator, district social worker and substance abuse counselor, a district school psychologist, a school resource officer and cafeteria support.

All classes are heterogeneously grouped which allows for flexibility in meeting the needs of the students at all levels. Specific needs of all students are met through a variety of means including the use of small groups either inside or outside the regular classroom. The school also offers special curriculum programs including math enrichment programs for grades 1- 5, and the KEY program for gifted and talented students in grades 4 and 5.

South School offers students before, during and after school activities. The music department directs a school band for 5th graders, orchestra for 4th & 5th graders, a chorus of 4th & 5th graders, and instrument lessons. The "Art to Art” (a countrywide art sharing program) program, PTA "Reflections", Destination Imagination teams, a drama club and a chess and computer club are also activities in which students can choose to participate. Our PE department is very active directing or supporting a cross-country racing program for those 5th graders who want to run, various fitness programs throughout the school year, Adventure Days (a theme oriented week-long fitness program). South Londonderry School also offers an after school homework program and an in school post office, "Wee Deliver".

South School is very fortunate to have the wonderful support of active PTA and Parent Volunteers. The PTA has sponsors a number of school-wide and special programs such as the Sum+It math program, school store, book fairs, family fun nights, and ice cream socials. In addition, student enrichment programs (providing speakers and assemblies for students and parents aligned with grade level themes), field trips, the school newsletter, Teacher Appreciation Week, Red Ribbon Week, and an incentive reading program are also sponsored by the PTA. Our PTA volunteers contribute many unselfish hours to our students and staff and have earned the Blue Ribbon Volunteer Award for the past 12 years.
